The Arctic ABC program will design innovative autonomous drifting observatories to be deployed in Arctic ice covered waters. The infrastructure is based on cutting-edge sensor technology, and the autonomous drift stations will provide unprecedented opportunities, as they will operate in remote places without constant supervision.

The biology campaigns of the project focus around three primary research themes: 1. How do pelagic (water column) species perceive light, in particular during the polar night? 2. How, when, and where do pelagic species conduct vertical migrations in a highly seasonal Arctic, especially during the polar night? 3. Who is present and active under sea ice, in the winter, and what do they feed on?

Arctic ABC = Applied technology, Biological interactions, and Consequences in an era of abrupt climate change is a modern, multi and interdisciplinary research activity.
